How to Play a Super Fast Drum Beat

It’s as ancient as drumming itself and it’s a secret that is not revealed to beginning drummers until they are ready.  Because of all your hard work, you have reached the point in your young drumming career where you are about to learn the answer to the age-old question:  How do great drummers play super fast songs and make it look so easy?

After all that fantastic build up, the answer is very simple:  They play half the notes.  That’s right!  For super fast songs, drummers leave out notes.

Here’s what the beat looks like:

The 30 Richest Drummers in the World

Have you seen the list by Celebrity Net Worth of the 30 richest drummers in the world?  It’s an impressive group of individuals!  But their individuality wasn’t the biggest reason they’ve been successful.  Take a look at this list and see if you can figure out what they all have in common.

The thing that struck me as I studied the list is that the richest drummers in the world made their money not with technical ability or leading a band but by being a supportive member of a band. And specifically, they are/were members of rock bands. No jazz, country or classical music drummers on the list.

Are They the Best Technical Drummers?

How to Play a Super Slow Drum Beat

Have you ever played the drums to a super slow song but it didn’t really feel good?  Maybe you tried playing what I call The Eighth Note Beat but the song was soooo slow that there was too much “space” between each note.  You may have even found yourself speeding up the tempo (“rushing”) to the point where the beat finally felt good to play.

Well here’s a solution and I’d like to help you learn it:

But first I need to give you a little background.

My Current Drumming Hero – Kenny Aronoff

If you read Who’s Your Drumming Hero?, you know that I’ve had a lot of drumming heroes.  I may have one for a while, switch to someone else then switch back.

I tend to focus on drummers who are playing the style of music that I’m playing.  I was playing in school big bands when Buddy Rich was my hero.  I was playing in a rock band when I studied John Bonham of Led Zeppelin.  And when I joined a country rock band, Keith Urban’s drummer, Chris McHugh, was my hero.

Along with occasional church band duties and infrequent gigs with a Brazilian jazz group, I’m playing country-rock music in the Chris Ward Band.  We play tunes from Chris’ albums, an Eagles tribute, and a variety of contemporary country songs.  For that reason, my current drumming hero is Kenny Aronoff, drummer for ex-Creedence Clearwater Revival leader, John Fogerty.  The style Kenny plays with John Fogerty is similar to what I’m playing with Chris Ward.

The Easiest and Most Common Drum Beat in the World

Wouldn’t it be great if you could play lots of songs on the drums quickly and easily?  You can by learning a simple but powerful pattern that I call The Eighth Note Drum Beat.  You can have fun applying this beat to many popular songs while taking the time to learn more complex drum technique.

I have this theory that the most popular rock, pop and country songs over the past 50 years can be played with one of six drum beats.
